Royal Navy Service Papers
The Royal Navy Service ledgers came to the PRO this year into catagory ADM188. These are a snapshot of a mans service and were a summary of reports recieved in from the ship. They are arranged by service number. The service number was prefixed depending on the trade of the sailor. M prefixes were trades men, K prefixes are stokers. These ledgers are listed in the index by service number, you can look up the number you want and order the ledger.
What Info will it give you?
It will give a place of birth and rough description. The postings and dates will be listed, although the ledgers go up to 1929 only, after that you will know nothing. The trades and ranks are listed, also the rating, ability and character are given. All in all it gives you a snapshot of a mans service.
